Why I Switched to Reusable Period Products at 52 (and My Daughter Did Too at 20)

For more than 40 years, I used disposable period products without thinking twice. Pads, tampons — whatever was on the shelf. It never occurred to me there could be a better way. It wasn’t until I turned 52 that I finally discovered reusable options like menstrual cups, discs, and cloth pads.

What shocked me most? These products have been around for almost 100 years. I felt like I’d been blind to something so simple, so smart — and so much better for my body and the planet.

1. Reusables Aren’t Just for the Young

There’s a misconception that menstrual cups and reusable pads are only for teens or eco-influencers. But I’m living proof: you can be in your 50s and still fall in love with a better period.

Reusable period care is not age-specific — it’s about knowing your body and choosing what makes you feel good. And for me, that means less irritation, fewer leaks, and the comfort of knowing I’m no longer throwing away hundreds of pads and tampons every year.

2. The Fear Factor Is Real — But You’ll Get Over It

Many of my customers, like me, are hesitant at first. The idea of touching menstrual blood or washing cloth pads might feel overwhelming. But here’s the truth: once you try it — even just once — everything changes.

Yes, it takes a little curiosity and a bit of practice. But then comes the comfort — the moment you realize that touching your blood isn’t scary, and that a cup can feel like nothing at all once it's in. You start trusting your body again. You see that cloth pads actually breathe and don’t trap heat like plastic ones. You notice your skin doesn’t get irritated like before.

You don’t feel gross — you feel empowered.

3. Why I Created Hume’s Period Care

Hume’s isn’t a giant corporation. It’s not a trendy throwaway brand. It’s a handmade, community-built effort to help more people discover what I wish I had found sooner.

Our products are made with biocompatible materials, no toxins, no dyes, and local production wherever possible. We make it easy to switch — and even easier to love your body in the process.

4. It’s Not Just Better — It’s Actually Easier

Here’s what I’ve learned in the last 3 years of using reusables:

  • I spend less money.

  • I feel more comfortable — no chafing, no odors.

  • I’ve reduced my waste dramatically.

  • I’m more in tune with my body and my cycle.

I also feel proud. Every month, I make a choice that supports the planet, protects my health, and sets an example — not just for my daughter, but for every person who feels stuck using disposables because that’s what we were taught.

If you’re curious, nervous, or even skeptical, you’re not alone. I was too. But if you’re ready to try something that could completely change how you experience your period — I’m here to say: you can do this.
